It can also be configured to house six 5 frame colonies, two 17 frame colonies or any combination in between. Hive body is made from 2x pine for 1.5” thick walls, closer to mimicking thicker tree cavities, and roof is insulated with 2” of insulation board and ends of roof have 1” of insulation. The combination of thicker hive walls and an insulated roof will help the bees regulate temperature better and the housing of multiple colonies in one hive helps them share warmth and get through winter a little easier, it’s really a nice setup ideal for overwintering nucs and other things as well.
